SD cabinet heads to meet with US transport board

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Two South Dakota cabinet secretaries are going to Washington this week to discuss rail shipment problems with members of the Surface Transportation Board.
• The heads of the state departments of Agriculture and Transportation, Lucas Lentsch and Darin Bergquist, will meet with the STB Friday.
• Gov. Dennis Daugaard's office says they'll convey his concerns about a shortage of rail shippers to take state commodities to the market.
• Lentsch addressed the STB in April about the backlog of shipments, and the STB issued a decision directing railways to report their plans to ensure delivery of fertilizer shipments.
• The governor's office says it has also shared its concerns with the Burlington, Northern & Santa Fe; Canadian Pacific; and Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern railroads.

Howie says secure border before immigration talk

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Independent candidate for U.S. Senate Gordon Howie says the nation should not be talking about immigration reform until it secures its border.
• The former state lawmaker from Rapid City says there may be many secondary problems regarding immigration, but the U.S. must stop the flood of illegal immigration into the country.
• Howie, former Republican Gov. Mike Rounds, Democrat Rick Weiland and independent Larry Pressler are seeking the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Tim Johnson.
• President Barack Obama this week asked Congress for $3.7 billion in emergency spending to get more resources to the border. The funding would increase detention, care and transportation of unaccompanied children, help speed the removal of adults with children by increasing the capacity of immigration courts and increase prosecution of smuggling networks.
