His association has surveyed members and found that the average age of superintendents is 52 and many plan to retire in a few years.
• Warren is moving from the classroom to the top of the district, though she also served as the dean of students at the middle school. She joined the district in 1983 and said her familiarity with the school and the community is a boon.
• "I felt that helped me with the transition," Warren said. "It's going to be a challenging experience for me."
• Munson said his organization is helping to support these new superintendents, including an upcoming conference that'll feature a workshop for those new to their post.
• "There's going to be a huge learning curve for those folks," Munsen said. "We're going to see more and more vacancies and challenges to fill those roles."

Congress OKs bill transferring cemetery ownership

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Congress has passed a bill transferring the ownership of nine historic cemeteries in the Black Hills of western South Dakota from the U.S. Forest Service to local communities.
• Sen. John Thune and Rep. Kristi Noem say the communities have managed the cemeteries for generations, and the federal ownership created headaches for the communities and an unnecessary liability for the Forest Service.
• The bill is awaiting presidential approval after passing the Senate on Wednesday. The House approved it in May.
• The legislation changes the ownership of the Englewood, Galena, Hayward, Mountain Meadows, Roubaix, Nemo, Rockerville, Silver City and Cold Springs cemeteries.

Boy drives SUV into Mount Rushmore shop; girl hurt

• KEYSTONE, S.D. (AP)  An 8-year-old girl was taken to a hospital with minor injuries after a 12-year-old boy crashed his parents' sport utility vehicle into a gift shop at a tourist attraction near Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
• The boy was sitting in the running SUV when he shifted gears into drive and crashed into the Rushmore Tramway Adventures building about midday Wednesday, according to the Pennington County Sheriff's Office. The girl was standing with others on a sidewalk nearby and suffered cuts from flying window glass. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
