• "It appears they were fighting -- having a disagreement earlier in the evening," said Lt. Matt Burns of the Sioux Falls Police Department. "What precipitated the violent event, we can only speculate. It obviously got out of hand. We hope the investigation with clarify that."
• Martinez appeared in court Thursday and was being held on a $1 million bond. It was not immediately clear whether Martinez had an attorney yet.
• Guerra's 3- and 6-year-old children were in a back room during the incident. They were put in the custody of social service officials Thursday.
• There's no evidence that Martinez was intoxicated, Burns told the Leader. Police were talking with friends and family Thursday to see if there was a history of violence between the two, although neither party had filed a restraining order against the other, according to court records.
• The incident is the third homicide in Sioux Falls this year.

Blue Mounds State Park to reopen Monday

• LUVERNE, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says Blue Mounds State Park near Luverne will reopen Monday after a monthlong shutdown caused by flood damage.
• The park in southwestern Minnesota was forced to close June 18.
• The campground, interpretive center, climbing area and all trails except the Mound Creek Trail will reopen Monday. The swimming area will remain closed as DNR engineers decide how to address the damaged spillway and dam.
• The park received nearly 11 inches of rain during two storms in mid-June. No park visitors were injured. The park's bison herd also weathered the storm and remains in good health.

Suspect in death of NFL star's son denies abuse

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A man charged with killing the 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in South Dakota last fall says the child choked on strawberry fruit snacks while he was in the bathroom.
• The Argus Leader reports (http://argusne.ws/1nbAob7 ) Joseph Patterson, 28, is facing second-degree murder, manslaughter and aggravated assault charges in the death of two-year-old Tyrese Ruffin.
• Patterson gave his version of events through his lawyer as he appeared in court Thursday for a motion hearing.
• Prosecutors want jurors to hear evidence from previous accusations of child
