the government to buy fractionated land parcels from their multiple owners and give them to the tribes.
• The $1.9 billion program is the largest piece of a $3.4 billion settlement of a lawsuit claiming Interior Department officials mismanaged trust money held for hundreds of thousands of Indian landowners.
• The program began with the South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation and so far has spent $72 million to restore 203,000 acres of land to tribes.
• This spring, Interior Department officials said the program would expand to 21 reservations, including the three named Wednesday.


A fourth of SD superintendents are new this year

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A school administrators group in South Dakota says nearly a quarter of superintendents in the state's 151 school districts will be new to their positions this school year.
• Rob Monson is the executive director of the School Administrators of South Dakota.
• He says many of the positions will be filled by former principals and teachers with limited experience.
• Monson says some superintendents may have left the state and others are retiring. The state's superintendents have had to make tough decisions to recent years as schools have been plagued by tight funding and a shortage of teachers.
• Turnover is high across the country as well as superintendents nationwide have had to decide which programs and personnel to cut to accommodate shrinking budgets.


State's free pesticide recycling program starting

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Farmers, ranchers and businesses can recycle pesticide containers for free starting next week.
• The South Dakota Department of Agriculture begins the collection program Monday and it will run through Sept. 10.
• There are 37 locations around the state.

Wall selected to be SD's capital for a day

• WALL, S.D. (AP) -- The western South Dakota city of Wall has been selected as South Dakota's honorary Capital for a Day later this month.
