• The flooding throughout southeastern South Dakota last month was caused by heavy rains. The Capital Journal reports that Doug Kluck with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the rainfall in parts of the region was at record levels.

SD residents remember 'Dances with Wolves'

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- People in Pierre are getting ready to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first three filming days for the movie "Dances With Wolves."
• Nearly 100 residents of Pierre and Fort Pierre were involved in the making of the movie.
• Speakers will share their experiences at the mid-July celebration. Organizers say it will provide the opportunity for reminiscing.
• Participants will visit Houck Buffalo Ranch southwest of Fort Pierre, where some of the film was shot.
• Kevin Costner co-produced, directed and starred in the movie. He is not expected to attend the events.
• He will be invited to next year's 25th anniversary of the film's release.

Centrist PAC supporting Pressler

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A political action committee aimed at eliminating partisanship from American politics is endorsing independent candidate Larry Pressler in his bid to take back the U.S. Senate seat he held decades ago.
• Centrist Project Voice director Charles Wheelan says Pressler embraces centrist principles that include fiscal responsibility, environmental stewardship, social tolerance, economic opportunity and a pragmatic approach to solving policy challenges.
• Wheelan. a senior lecturer and policy fellow at Dartmouth College, says the project is designed to empower the neglected but growing political middle by channeling the support of centrist Americans to a handful of key U.S. Senate candidates.
• The project is also supporting Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine; Democratic candidate Michelle Nunn of Georgia; independent candidate Greg Orman of Kansas; and American Party candidate Jill Bossi of South Carolina.
