Suspected meth lab prompts apartments evacuation

• MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) -- Residents of a Mitchell apartment building were evacuated for about seven hours while police investigated a suspected methamphetamine lab inside the building.
• Police shut down area streets and told residents in the building to leave for their own safety about 3 p.m. Monday. They were allowed back about 10 p.m.
• Two people were detained for questioning. Police did not immediately make any arrests.

SD man on trial for allegedly killing mother

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A Hot Springs man is on trial for allegedly killing his mother and hiding her body three years ago.
• Twenty-eight-year-old Matthew Tornquist is accused of killing Catherine Tornquist in October 2011 and stealing money from her. Her body has not been found. She was 56 when she disappeared.
• Matthew Tornquist has pleaded not guilty to murder and grand theft charges. His trial is being held in Rapid City. Jury selection began Monday, and testimony is ex

pected to last a couple of weeks.
• Tornquist will face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole if he's convicted.

Crime and human trafficking conference announced

• WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) -- A conference looking at violent crime and human trafficking in the Dakotas is planned in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in August.
• U.S. Attorney for North Dakota Tim Purdon says conference is Aug. 12-14 at the Washington Pavilion.
• The first day will focus on training sessions for health and social workers.
• The conference will be open to the public the last two days. Those days will feature discussions about human trafficking and violence against women in North Dakota's oil patch, Internet predators in the two states, sexual assault in Indian country,
