• Roger Smith, the director of conservation services for Ducks Unlimited in the Great Plains, said the Red River Basin isn't the highest-priority region for the conservation group, but said it supports conservation efforts regardless of where they're done.
• "We're happy to see the USDA acknowledge that conservation is important and we like seeing incentive-based conservation on private land," Smith said.

Man involved in Rapid City standoff charged

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A Rapid City man who took a 2-year-old boy hostage and barricaded himself from law enforcement officials for six hours Tuesday night has been charged with kidnapping and burglary.
• Raymond Cuny, 32, was charged Wednesday morning with first-degree kidnapping and two counts of second-degree burglary. A court clerk says Cuny is being held in the Pennington County Jail without bond.
• Cuny took the young boy hostage Tuesday evening and locked himself in Rapid City home. A special response team forced entry into the home and rescued the child around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. No officers were injured, and the child was returned unharmed to his family.
• The Pennington County sheriff said Cuny had two active felony warrants prior to the incident.
• A trial date has not been set yet for Cuny.

Work begins on $5M Sanford Lab visitor center

• LEAD, S.D. (AP) -- Construction is to begin Monday on a $5 million visitor center for the Sanford Underground Research Facility at Lead.
• Ground was broken for the facility on Tuesday. Construction of the 8,000-square-foot center is expected to be complete within a year, according to Mike Headley, executive director of the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority.
• Officials at the federally supported lab nearly a mile underground in the former Homestake gold mine are conducting research on complex subjects such as nuclear reactions within stars and dark matter, an elusive substance that scientists believe makes up about one-fourth of the universe.
• "For 126 years we mined this area for gold. Hopefully, for the next 126 years and beyond we will mine this area for scientific research and knowledge, not only for the
