Gov. asks for presidential disaster declaration

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard has requested a presidential disaster declaration to help South Dakotans whose homes and businesses were damaged by a tornado and flooding last month.
• The governor says the request is for the Individual Assistance program from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Daugaard says FEMA can offer programs to help state residents if the president approves the request.
• Federal, state and local teams assessed the extent of the damage to homes and businesses in three counties on June 26 and 27. Daugaard says the assessments led him to determine that a request is justified.
• The request does not guarantee the state will receive the federal funding.
