Weekend rainfall sets records in the Dakotas

• BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Weekend rainfall in the Dakotas set records in both states and led to flash flooding in some areas.
• The National Weather Service reports that Minot in northern North Dakota got more than 2.6 inches of rain on Saturday, breaking a 62-year-old record for the date. Pierre in central South Dakota got more than 1.4 inches, also a record -- and nearly all of it fell in just one hour.
• Water flowed over U.S Highway 83 in central North Dakota -- a major north-south artery. The rain also washed out games at the McQuade charity softball tournament in Bismarck, which drew more than 450 teams from around the country.
• Showers are in the forecast for both states this week. A severe thunderstorm watch was posted for southeastern South Dakota early Monday.

Ag specialists offering CAFO training session

• HURON, S.D. (AP) -- Several ag specialists from across the state will offer an environmental training session for operators of concentrated animal feeding operations on July 10.

• This training at the Crossroads Convention Center in Huron fulfills the environmental and manure-management training requirement to obtain a livestock permit for CAFOs from the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
• Attendees can also earn Certified Crop Advisor credits.
• The all-day training session is offered by specialists from SDSU Extension, South Dakota State University, the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
• The cost is $50 and includes lunch, breaks and training materials. Call (605) 688-5141 for more information.
