• PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota Department of Transportation would like to remind riders of off-road vehicles, such as ATVs and motorcycles, that riding in the highway right of way can cause damage to vegetation and lead to erosion and drainage issues.
• The problems that arise from over-use of roadway ditches by off-road vehicles can pose a safety hazard for motorists who leave the roadway and result in costly repairs.
• Those who are recreationally riding off-road vehicles in the state highway ditches are asked to remember this and it is suggested that riding patterns/routes be altered or modified if damage in highway ditches begins to become evident. If the damage becomes severe enough, the department will have to close the affected ditches to off-road vehicles.

• Off-road vehicle riders are reminded to know where they can operate legally and follow state regulations while driving in highway rights of way. Riders are also encouraged to know the area they are riding and be especially cautious where construction work has occurred or is occurring.
