Crews fight early morning fire in Sioux Falls

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Sioux Falls firefighters took 40 minutes to get a house fire under control early Wednesday morning.
• Authorities say firefighters were on scene shortly after midnight and found the home's garage engulfed in flames.
• Authorities say the home's occupants evacuated before firefighters arrived. One dog and two cats were rescued from the home. Another cat died from smoke inhalation.
• Authorities say the home sustained moderate smoke damage. The Red Cross responded to assist the homeowners.

SD reminds mowers to wait for pheasants to mature

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota officials are reminding people not to mow in some medians and highway ditches until July 10 to protect the pheasant population after the matter was discussed by the governor's pheasant task force this month.
• The state bird is threated with habitat loss and early mowing puts young broods at risk.
• Tony Leif is the director of the Division of Wildlife director. He says roadside ditches provide nesting cover for the animals.
• This time of year hens nest and hatch broods, which are vulnerable to mowing equipment because of limited mobility. The birds tend to hide when threatened, rather than take flight.
• State research indicates hay mowing equipment is responsible for a significant number of pheasant deaths in June and July.

SD eligible for part of bad mortgage settlement

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- More than 100 South Dakota borrowers will be eligible to receive a small portion of a nearly $1 billion settlement that a Virginia-based company has agreed to with the federal government in order to resolve allegations that it provided risky mortgage loans.
