Recount coming in SD Senate race split by 30 votes
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota candidate for state Senate David Johnson is working on petitions for a recount. • Rapid City incumbent Republican Phil Jensen won 1,234 votes -- 30 more than Johnson in Tuesday's primary. • The difference between the two candidates is within the 2 percent margin required for a recount. The winner will face Democrat Robin Page in the November election. • Candidates have three days after the vote counts are finalized by the Secretary of State's office to file the petition. • Johnson must submit petitions to the auditors in Meade and Pennington counties by Friday. • Brandon Johnson is the Secretary of State's office senior elections coordinator. He says he can't think of an instance when a recount has reversed the pronounced results. He adds that the automatic tabulating equipment is very accurate. •
SD Gaming Commission OKs new rules, games NORA HERTEL, Associated Press
• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A South Dakota gambling oversight commission accepted several new rules and changes to existing mandates Wednesday, including policies to allow two new games in casinos: War Blackjack and Dead Man's Hand. • The three of the five members of the state's Commission on Gaming who were present at the public hearing also set policies on use of electronic devices at tables. About a dozen representatives from Deadwood casinos and the gambling industry were there as well. • Commissioners watched demonstrations of the two new games. • Tony Sieber, general manager at the Four Aces Casino in Deadwood, requested the rule change for War Blackjack. The game, which was previewed in Las Vegas last fall, is a combination of the two games in its name. Dead Man's Hand, another variation on blackjack, was requested by Silverado/Franklin Gaming controller Tim Burke. • The commission has also adopted a policy prohibiting the use of devices for (Continued on page 18)
