• South Dakota farmers are expected to harvest 1.1 million acres of the crop, up 63 percent from 2013.
• Winter wheat production nationwide is pegged at 1.38 billion bushels, down 10 percent from a year ago.

Senate candidates in SD split on health care law

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Two of the candidates vying to serve in U.S. Senate want to repeal President Barack Obama's new health care law while the other two want to keep and improve the act.
• Former Gov. Mike Rounds, a Republican, wants to repeal "Obamacare" and replace it with a market-based system that creates competition.
• Democrat Rick Weiland says the act should be kept and improved. He wants to open Medicare to people of all ages.
• Independent candidate Larry Pressler says he wants to keep the law and fix the problems. He says lawmakers should compromise on tort reform and oversight of a board tasked with containing Medicare spending.
• Independent candidate Gordon Howie wants to repeal the law, saying recent troubles at the VA show why the federal government should not run health care.

2 SD universities team up on public health degree

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University will share courses, faculty and resources in offering a joint master's degree in public health.
• The program will focus on rural health and increasing training levels for practitioners across South Dakota. It will also cover illness prevention and data analysis.
• On Wednesday the state Board of Regents approved the proposal. The program will be available this fall online.
• Currently, there is no such degree in the state.
• According to state officials, a 2009 survey showed only 2 percent of South Dakota workers in the field had a graduate degree in public health.
• Officials say interest in health care careers is growing.
