Partial funding restored to four programs

• Four programs received partial funding restored for the next year at Monday's Groton School Board meeting. The programs had had their funding cut after the state legislature cut the education budget in 2011.
• In order for the programs to continue, participants in the programs have had to raise the money themselves. This has placed a heavy burden on the community with all the fundraisers being held.
• "The original agreement was that funding would be restored to the programs when the state funding was back in place," Groton Superintendent Joe Schwan said. "I feel that the funding will be back in place by the 2015 school year. We can now look at relieving some of fundraising efforts; the same people are continuously being hit for money. A person can buy only so many pork sandwiches."
• Over the past three years cheerleading, debate and Destination Imagination only received $1500 from the school district to fund their programs. Golf received $2500 for the two seasons. With the new agreements Cheerleading will receive $3100, Debate $6150, Destination Imagination $3300 and golf will get $6150.Essentially, the school district will now cover the coaches' salaries for the programs.
• At the opening of the meeting, six families representing the Groton Soccer program spoke to the board members about the soccer program. They requested that the school district help relieve some of the funding pressure the program was under.
