Today in Weather History

• 1957: Southwest of Faulkton, one of four funnel clouds finally touched down and cut an erratic path to the northeast. One home was reduced to, as quoted, matchsticks and tidbits. The tornado strength was estimated as F3.
• 1968: A short lived F2 tornado moved northeast from 6 miles northeast of Britton. Barns were destroyed, and trees were uprooted on three farms. Two cars were picked up and thrown into a ditch. One person in a car was hospitalized. Damage was estimated at $150,000 to property and another $80,000 to crops.
• 1953: An F4 tornado hit Worcester, MA causing 94 fatalities. The tornado touched down in Petersham, traveled through Worcester, and on to Southborough. Debris was carried eastward and fell in the Boston area. About 4000 houses and buildings were destroyed, totaling more than $52 million in damages.
• 1972: 10 to 15 inches of rain fell in about ten hours on the Black Hills above Rapid City, SD. Rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour caused man-made Canyon Lake to rise 12 feet between 9pm and 10:45pm. At 10:45 the dam holding the lake gave way, resulting in a massive amount of water rushing down the canyon and into Rapid City. 238 people were killed, and 15 of the 23 bridges in and near the city were destroyed.
• 1984: Over 400 people were killed by an F5 tornado that tore through the communities of Belyanitsy and Ivanovo in western Russia northeast of Moscow.
• 1991: Two-day total rainfall topped 30 inches in the western India city of Bombay. It was the heaviest rainfall in four decades.
