• Arrows with fixed broadheads do not require as much draw weight in the new rules-- 40 pounds for elk and 30 pounds for other large game. This lower requirement could draw younger archers who have trouble drawing more weight in a bow.
• Archers will also be able to use lights on their sights, which supporters said are necessary at ground level where visibility is limited. Rogers said manufacturers have been building them into sights already, which put compliant hunters in a tough position before the rule change.
• Cameras and cellphones can also be used with sights for photographs now.
• The commission did not change the rules that prohibit crossbows and arrows with explosive, poisonous or hydraulic points.

4,400 soldiers training in western South Dakota

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Soldiers from 15 states and four foreign nations are taking part in a military exercise in western South Dakota's Black Hills.
• The South Dakota National Guard is hosting its 30th annual Golden Coyote training exercise. It starts Saturday and runs for two weeks.
• The Guard says 4,400 members of several branches of the military will conduct combat, support and service missions. They will simulate military operations, conduct humanitarian missions such as hauling firewood to American Indian communities, and do engineering projects such as resurfacing roads.
• The public is being asked to keep a safe distance from all military vehicles and aircraft.

SD leads in production of 3 commodities in 2013

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota farmers and ranchers led the nation in the production of three commodities in 2013, up from just one the year before.
• The Agriculture Department says South Dakota producers once again led the U.S. in bison inventory. Oats production jumped from seventh to first, and South Dakota supplanted North Dakota as the nation's top sunflower producer for only the second time in recorded history.
• South Dakota was second last year in lambs and proso millet, and third in flaxseed, honey and grain sorghum.

More statehood anniversary committees established
