Seattle police: University student disarmed gunman during shooting; 1 dead

• SEATTLE (AP) -- When a lone gunman armed with a shotgun at a small Seattle university stopped firing at students to reload, another student pepper-sprayed him and subdued him with the help of others and prevented more deaths, police said.
• "There are a number of heroes in this," Assistant Police Chief Paul McDonagh said. "The people around him (the gunman) stepped up."
• A 19-year-old man was fatally shot and two other young people were wounded after the gunman entered the foyer at Otto Miller Hall on the Seattle Pacific University campus and started shooting Thursday afternoon. When he paused to reload, a student building monitor disarmed him. The gunman had additional rounds and a knife, McDonagh said.
• "But for the great response by the people of Seattle Pacific, this incident might have been much more tragic," he said.
• The man in custody was not a student at the school, McDonagh told a news conference.

New Brunswick lockdown ends as police catch man suspected of killing Mounties

• MONCTON, New Brunswick (AP) -- The man suspected in the shooting deaths of three Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the wounding of two others in a rare case of gun violence in eastern Canada was arrested early Friday, police said.
• Justin Bourque was arrested at around 12:30 a.m., said Paul Greene, a spokesman with the RCMP. Authorities had identified the 24-year-old Bourque as their suspect after the shootings Wednesday evening in the northwest area of the city.
• The attack on the Mounties' ranks was the deadliest in nearly a decade.
• Michelle Thibodeau said she saw the Moncton man arrested in the front yard of her home. Thibodeau, 21, said she heard the suspect say, "I'm done," before his arrest by officers with guns drawn.
• Much of this normally quiet Canadian city of about 60,400 people had been on lockdown, with frightened residents huddled in their homes as Mounties scoured the quiet streets.
