1871: The U.S.'s 15 minute rainfall record was set in Galveston, TX at 3.95" as the season's first tropical storm came onshore. Galveston would be struck by another tropical storm just five days later.


1944: Weather conditions forced Supreme Allied Commander Dwight Eisenhower to postpone the invasion of France that had been scheduled for June 5.

1958: Severe storms swept through northwest Wisconsin. A half-mile wide F5 tornado moved at 52 mph from south of Woodville to east of Colfax. 20 people were killed. Also, an F4 tornado took four lives at Chippewa Falls, and another F4 killed four people near the small communities of Boyd and Stanley.

1980: Edwin Robinson from Falmouth, ME had been blind and partially deaf since a truck accident in 1971. After being struck by lightning on this date, his hearing and sight returned.
