New hope for fixing Railroad Avenue

In case anyone is interested, the counter for Railroad Avenue is located by the sign, just east of the curve.

• Now that Dirk Rogers is the new county highway superintendent, there is new hope that Railroad Avenue east of Groton will be fixed. There is a good chance that the city will be able to get a Community Access Grant to help with the repairs from Broadway to US Highway 12. The city would be responsible for the repairs from Broadway to Sixth Street and the county from Sixth Street to US 12. There is a maximum amount of $200,000 that would be available with the 60:40 matching grant. Rogers has expressed an interest in making sure there is a signed agreement where the county would be responsible for the upkeep from Sixth Street to US 12. There is also hope that maybe the state will help with the project as Railroad Avenue would be used as a detour in 2016 when SD Highway 37 is reworked from Railroad Avenue to US 12. Meanwhile there is a counter on Railroad Avenue from now until next week. The counter is located east of Sixth Street, just west of the Olive Grove Pump House.
• There are a lot of things that need to get done this summer. Councilman Eddy Opp said that the slide and teeter-totter both need to be painted, the benches need new wood and the poles in front of the pool need to be redone. It was also mentioned that the wood in the bleachers at the baseball field and at the skating rink need to be replaced.
• There was a lengthy discussion on the flowers at the cemetery. Councilman Burt Glover said the way it is now, it will take an additional one to two hours to mow the cemetery. "It's everywhere," he said of the flowers and decorations. Councilman Mary Fliehs said she wants the flowers and decorations to stay on until Labor Day.  The council finally agreed that when the cemetery is mowed, the decorations and
