22 primary races for South Dakota Legislature
NORA HERTEL, Associated Press

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota voters will decide 22 legislative primary races Tuesday -- five Democratic and 17 Republican. Seven of the races are for state Senate.
• Of those primaries, the winners of eight will not face competition from other parties in the November election, so the primary will determine who gets those seats in the House or Senate.
• Among the top races is a Republican rematch between Sen. Jeff Monroe and Tad Perry for the district around Pierre. Monroe, considered the more conservative candidate, won in 2012 by 36 votes.
• Another conservative Republican, Sen. Phil Jensen of Rapid City, who caught flack for saying businesses should be allowed to discriminate by race or religion, faces arborist David Johnson in the primary. In the same district, Democrats Robin Page and Haven Stuck are running for their party's nomination.
• Each of South Dakota's 35 legislative districts elects one senator and two representatives, except for two districts split into two separate House districts, each of which elects its own representative. Primaries are held in districts where a political party had more than one Senate candidate or more than two House candidates.
• Republicans have a strong majority of 28-7 in the Senate and 53-17 in the House, and that stranglehold is not expected to change with this year's elections. But South Dakota's term limits will lead to some turnover.
• In three Rapid City-area districts, Republican incumbents face challengers. In District 33, Reps. Jacqueline Sly and Scott Craig face Rip Ryness. And incumbent Rep. Chip Campbell is in the race with Lynne DiSanto and Nancy Trautman for two nominations. Current Reps. Lance Russell and Mike Verchio are challenged by Julie Frye-Mueller.
• In the capital region, District 24, Republican Mark Venner is on the ballot with Reps. Tim Rounds and Mary Duvall. With Mitchell's Rep. Lance Carson term-limited, Republican Rep. Tona Rozum is up against state legislative staffer Joshua Klumb and Mitchell United Way Executive Director David Stevens.
• District 16 Republican incumbents Reps. Jim Bolin and David Anderson, who was appointed by the governor to replace Patty Miller, will face Kevin Jensen.
• Christine Erickson, who has resigned her post to serve on the Sioux Falls City Council, is leaving Republican Rep. Jim Stalzer to face David Landry and Mark Wil
