Primary key for 11 South Dakota Legislature seats
NORA HERTEL, Associated Press

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- For some candidates running for the South Dakota Legislature, the June 3 primary is the only competitive race on the road to state office.
• Eleven seats have competition within one party and will not be contested by an opposing party. Seven of those are Republican.
• Each of South Dakota's 35 legislative districts elects one senator and two representatives, except for two districts split into two separate House districts, each of which elects its own representative. Primaries will be held in districts where a political party had more than one Senate candidate or more than two House candidates.
• DISTRICT 29
• Republican voters will choose among three candidates to replace Sen. Larry Rhoden of Union Center, who's running for U.S. Senate. First term incumbent Rep. Gary Cammack, Union Center, is hoping to move chambers and faces Susan Cheshier and LeRoy Kindler, both are new to politics and from the Newell area.

• Wink is in the ring with other ranchers Wanda Blair and Tammy Basel and candidate Terri Jorgenson. Farmer Thomas Brunner previously served eight years in the House.
• Republican groups in Meade and Pennington Counties have not endorsed any one candidate before the primary. But candidates have met in forums organized by other groups, like the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce.
• DISTRICT 23
• Another potential leader in the House will face four other Republicans in this north central district. Rep. Justin Cronin of Gettysburg is Assistant Majority Leader. Majority Leader Rep. David Lust is term limited this year. Cronin and four others with a range of civic experience will face off for two seats. Dale Hargens of Miller served eight years in the House, and Michele Harrison of Mobridge is executive director of the city's economic development corporation. Larry Nielson chairs the Spink County Republicans and Gene Toennies has experience on the Cresbard
