through October. Bees are then shipped to California to pollinate almond crops and to Washington to pollinate apples.
• The hives are just returning to South Dakota, state apiarist Bob Reiners said.
• "Everybody's pretty excited right now," Reiners said. "Everybody I've talked to their bees look better than they did a year ago at this time."
• Stolle said some warm weather in June would be a big help to this year's crop. The weather service shows August 2013 temperatures were normal and September in Sioux Falls was 5.4 degrees higher than normal.
• "When you only have about a three-month window for gathering honey and you lose one of those months, that kind of puts a damper on things," Stolle said.

Honored SDSU ag professor to retire after 27 years

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Award-winning South Dakota State University professor Steve Pohl will retire this week.
• Pohl has served 27 years in SDSU's College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences and the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department.
• His research in livestock, ventilation and the environment has gone to help set industry standards. He is behind a wide-reaching workshop called "Managing Your Unseen Employee: The Ventilation System."
• He has co-authored more than 100 publications.
• Pohl was inducted into the Rural Builders Hall of Fame. He has also received the National Hog Farmer Master Award and the South Dakota Honorary Master Pork Producer and Lifetime Achievement Award.
• SDSU will host a reception for Pohl on May 30.

GFP Commission proposes archery equipment changes

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission has proposed several changes to archery equipment regulations.
• Among the suggestions: remove the barbed point broad head restriction; remove terms "bolts or darts" from the archery rules; allow the use of cameras, video cameras and cellphones; change the size of compound bows; and allow hunters to use mechanical broad heads for elk hunting.
• The entire proposal is available on the GFP website. The commission will finalize the plan June 5-6 in Yankton. Written comments can be sent to wildinfo@state.sd.us.
