Lots of prep work done to get ready for the west side street project

A lot of prep work had to be done this spring to get Third Avenue West, Second Avenue West, State Street and the intersecting streets between Second and Third avenues ready for the street reconstruction project. Fire hydrants had to be moved, water values changed out, electrical poles moved, trees removed and the stumps had to be ground out, natural gas lines had to be moved as did some electrical lines. The $1 million project has begun as the crew from the Bob Johnson Construction company has started on State Street as shown below. Pictured above is Nick Olson from Olson Backhoe and Trenching doing the digging to replace a fire hydrant on Washington St. Pictured on the left are Dwight Zerr and Terry Herron from the city of Groton.

The left photo features trees that had to be removed. The right photo features the crew from Northwestern Energy moving a Natural Gas line on West Second Avenue. The entire gas line from Washington to State Street had to be bored with new service lines being dug in.
