SD Guard hosting regional competition next week

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Sixteen National Guard soldiers from eight states are taking part next week in a competition in the Black Hills of western South Dakota.
• The Region 6 Best Warrior Competition will include two soldiers each from South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Male and female soldiers will compete in various events designed to challenge their skills and toughness.
• Events Monday through Wednesday will include written exams, battle drills, shooting tests, land navigation, an obstacle course, a 6-mile road march and a physical fitness test.
• Winners of the region's soldier and non-commissioned officers of the year will advance to national competition at Camp Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas, in July.

Aberdeen cancer center to be named for Meyer, wife

• ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) -- Basketball coach Don Meyer (MY'-ur) is under hospice care at home, but some of his core principles will live on in a cancer center that will bear his name and that of his wife.
• The Don and Carmen Meyer Center of Excellence at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen will house the Avera Cancer Institute.
• The couple and Gov. Dennis Daugaard launched the fundraising effort for the project last month.
• The $13.5 million, 26,000 square foot building will provide care and expanded services for not just patients but also caregivers.
• Groundbreaking is set for late summer.
• Hospital president Todd Forkel says there will be a wall with photos of Meyer and video of him sharing messages of faith and perseverance that should encourage people fighting cancer.

SD State Fair $100,000 closer to exhibit hall

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Monsanto has given $100,000 toward a new exhibit hall on the South Dakota State Fairgrounds.
• The Nordby Exhibit Hall for 4-H, Youth, and Community will be nearly 47,000
