VA hires company to study SD reconfiguration plan

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has chosen a Nebraska company to study its plan to reconfigure its health care system in western South Dakota's Black Hills.
• The VA chose Labat Environmental of Bellevue, Nebraska. The analysis will study potential environmental, cultural, historic, social and economic effects of the plan. It could take up to 1 ½ years to complete.
• The VA has served veterans in Hot Springs for more than a century but now wants to move some services to Rapid City. The Hot Springs VA hospital that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places would be shuttered, and an outpatient clinic would be opened.
• Many veterans and members of South Dakota's congressional delegation oppose the plan.

Sioux Falls Council approves $19.4M indoor pool

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The Sioux Falls City Council has approved funding for an indoor pool at the city's Spellerberg Park.
• Council members after more than an hour of public debate on Tuesday night approved paying for the $19.4 million aquatic center with more than $11 million in capital funding left over from last year, and city budget money over the next three years.
• City residents in April rejected a ballot measure for a new outdoor pool at Spellerberg Park following a campaign by a group pushing for an indoor pool.
• Sanford Health earlier this month said it would commission a feasibility study on housing an indoor pool at the Sanford Sports Complex. Spokesman Mike Begeman on Monday said Sanford supports the city's plans to build at Spellerberg.
