SD Highway Patrol lauds 4 for saving child's life

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol has honored four people for saving the life of a 2-year old in a fatal crash last September near Mitchell.
• Farmer Jacob Hohn and college students Abby Albin, Corey Ramold and Brandon Sandoz received the Superintendent's Award for Meritorious Service on Friday.
• The four responded to the crash by securing the child, performing first aid and taking care of vehicle fires.
• Highway Patrol superintendent Col. Craig Price says their actions are heroic.
• The two drivers in the crash have died.
• The Highway Patrol has also awarded the surviving toddler a "Saved by the Belt" award.

More than 1,200 to get diplomas in Vermillion

• VERMILLION, S.D.' (AP) -- The University of South Dakota will issue diplomas to more than 1,200 graduates on Saturday.
• It's the 127th spring commencement for the Vermillion school.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson will be the keynote speaker at the DakotaDome. Johnson is a 1998 USD graduate who got his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2001.
• The ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m.
• The school will also honor distinguished faculty from the 2013-14 academic year with several awards.

Campaign to turn away same-sex couples suspended

• PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The sponsors of a measure to permit Oregon business owners to turn away same-sex couples whose weddings they object to for religious reasons have abandoned their campaign.
