Woman pleads guilty to embezzling from SD school

• WATERTOWN, S.D. (AP) -- A Watertown woman accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from the local school district has pleaded guilty.
• News outlets report that 43-year-old Denise Trively has entered a guilty plea to grand theft embezzlement charges.
• The plea agreement with the Codington County state's attorney requires Trively to pay back nearly $147,000. The sum includes the embezzlement amount and audit fees.
• Authorities allege Trively took the money between June 2012 and October 2013 while she was benefits coordinator for the district. She's been suspended since November.
• She is scheduled to be sentenced June 11. The felony embezzlement charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
• A telephone listing for Trively could not be found and it is unclear whether she has legal representation.

SD test levels stagnant between 2009 and 2013

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota's reading and math assessment scores for twelfth graders have stagnated.
• The state's results between 2009 and 2013 reflect national averages, which have also leveled off.
• U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan says educational stagnation is troubling.
• South Dakota is one of 11 states piloting a national assessment called the Nation's Report Card by National Assessment of Educational Progress. It's the largest assessment of what America's students know and can do in different subjects.
• The percentages of South Dakota students above the proficient level in math and reading in 2013 were higher than the national average.
• Twenty eight percent of South Dakota twelfth graders were more than proficient in math compared to the 25 percent nationally. And 39 percent were proficient in reading compared to the 36 percent nationally.
