SDHSAA seeks to fill four vacancies on board
•  By Dana Hess
for SDNA

•  PIERRE - Half of its eight-member board will be new after elections to fill four vacancies on the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors.
•  Expiring are the terms of board chairman Darren Paulson of Rapid City, the West River at-large representative, and Eldon Marshall of White River, the Native American at-large representative. Terms left unfinished are those of a small school representative, left open when Miller Superintendent Mike Ruth resigned, and a large-school board member seat, left open by the death of Aberdeen School Board Member Mike Miller.
•  Two of the slots on the board will be filled automatically due to only one nomination coming from the floor for each position during the association's annual meeting on Tuesday. Elected without opposition were Steve Morford, principal of Spearfish High School, for Paulson's West River at-large seat and Roger Bordeaux, superintendent at Todd County, who was elected without opposition to be the Native American at-large representative.
•  Nominated for the large school board member seat were Tammy Rieber of Watertown, Jim Hansen of Rapid City, Sherman Gose of Huron, Todd Kolden of Aberdeen, Sandy Klatt of Brandon Valley, Todd Thoelke of Sioux Falls and Deb Olson of Mitchell.
•  Nominated to fill the small school slot on the board were Mike Lodmel of Tri-Valley, Linda Whitney of Sanborn Central, Kevin Morehart of Philip and Dan Martin of Stanley County.
•  Each SDHSAA member school receives a vote in each election contest. Ballots are due back at SDHSAA by May 27. The winning candidate must receive a majority of the votes cast. If that doesn't happen, a run-off election will be held between the two candidates who got the most votes.
•  Regular board members serve five-year terms and may not be re-elected for a consecutive second term. The board member filling out Ruth's term will serve four years and the board member filling out Miller's term will serve two years.
