USD students to perform comedic contemporary opera

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The University of South Dakota Opera will perform the comedy "Too Many Sopranos."
• Performances will take place May 3 and 4 on the USD campus in Vermillion.
• Assistant Professor of Music Tracelyn Gesteland says the school has presented dramas in recent years, but this show is full of jokes and physical humor.
• The plot follows four sopranos, who represent different operatic stereotypes. The women reach heaven to learn there is only room for one soprano in the choir. So they venture to hell seeking tenors and basses to redeem and balance out the heavenly choir.
• The family-friendly show premiered in 2000. It will be performed in English. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students.

SD sex offender gets 18 months for not registering

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A convicted sex offender in South Dakota has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for failing to register with local authorities.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says 43-year-old Raynard Bad Moccasin was also ordered to spend five years on supervised released.
• Authorities say Bad Moccasin failed to register as a sex offender between May and September 2013. He pleaded guilty on January 2014.
• The U.S. Attorney's office says Bad Moccasin was previously convicted of a sexual offense in federal court and is required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

RV battery thieves hitting Pennington County

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The Pennington County Sheriff's Office is encouraging people to lock up their recreational vehicle batteries.
• It's investigating a rash of thefts targeting batteries in RVs around the county.
• The sheriff's office says batteries should be stored in a locked garage or other facility or put in a locked metal box.
• The agency also asks that all thefts be reported.
