The move was made in case the board didn't approve the hardship exemption.
•  "Those four kids would have a place to play basketball next year," Carney said, referring to the Marion/Freeman Academy agreement.
•  Winegar said they preferred to send the students to Canistota because of the cooperative that would go into effect the next year.
•  Board member Dan Whalen of Pierre said he believed it was the job of the board to encourage cooperatives.
•  As a school principal, board member Jason Uttermark of Aberdeen said that he is generally uneasy about making exceptions to rules. But, given the misprint in the handbook and the fact that the change was only for one year, he said, "It just feels right that a one-year exception could be made."
•  The SDHSAA staff didn't share that feeling.
•  "We have a totally different situation. Those kids have no other choice," Carney said, referring to the soccer players from Douglas. "I think it sets a precedent we really shouldn't go down."
•  Assistant Executive Director John Krogstrand said he knew of at least two schools that might not be able to field football teams next year because they followed the rules rather than seeking an exemption.
•  The hardship exemption passed on a 4-2 vote with no votes coming from board chairman Darren Paulson of Rapid City and Eldon Marshall of White River.

•  PIERRE - Ensuring that athletes who compete in a state tournament also put in their time during the regular season was just one of the topics tackled by the South Dakota High School Activities Association at its meeting Tuesday.
•  The new rule says that athletes must join the team by the fourth Monday from the official start of the season.
•  "Some kids weren't showing up until week eight or nine," said SDHSAA Assistant Executive Director Jo Auch.
•  Often those athletes were getting instruction in the sport somewhere else, according to SDHSAA Assistant Executive Director John Krogstrand. He said at tournament time the latecomer might take the place of an athlete who had been with the team the entire season.
