Activities association commits to seven classes of football

• PIERRE ­- In a wide-ranging conversation about football in South Dakota, Darren Paulson, Rapid City, said it best: "Football's its own animal."
• The president of the South Dakota High School Activities Association was referring to the near constant attention and tweaking that goes into the way the sport is structured in the state.
• At issue during the SDHSAA board meeting on Tuesday was a request from the staff for a change in the way enrollment is used to determine school size for football.  
• Assistant Executive Director John Krogstrand asked the board to approve using the male-only enrollment for the 2015-16 school year to determine classifications in football.
• As an example, Krogstrand said one school with an enrollment of 100 may have 65 boys and 35 girls while the opposite could be true of another school with a similar enrollment. Yet the way enrollment is measured, they would both be in the same classification for football.
