Republican Senate candidates debate in Pierre

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The five South Dakota Republicans competing for the party's nomination for U.S. Senate meet Saturday at a debate in Pierre.
• The South Dakota Newspaper Association is hosting the 90-minute forum as part of its annual convention.
• Watertown Public Opinion publisher Mark Roby will moderate. Questions will come from a panel of three South Dakota newspaper journalists.
• Seeking the GOP nomination are former Gov. Mike Rounds, state Sen. Larry Rhoden of Union Center, state Rep. Stace Nelson of Fulton, Yankton attorney and Army Reserves Maj. Jason Ravnsborg and Sioux Falls physician Annette Bosworth.
• The June 3 primary winner will join Democrat Rick Weiland and independent Larry Pressler on the Nov. 4 ballot.

SD Governor to host meetings to expand workforce

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota will host six meetings to discuss expanding the state's workforce.
• Governor Dennis Daugaard says a small labor pool is the state's biggest limitation to economic growth. Daugaard's Workforce Summits will bring together state, community, business and education leaders. Attendees will discuss current programs and trends and give feedback for future efforts.
• The first event will take place April 29 at Mitchell Technical Institute.
• The other meetings are:
• -- Wednesday, May 21, at Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown
• -- Thursday, May 22, at the Days Inn Convention Center in Brookings
• -- Tuesday, June 3, at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn in Rapid City
• -- Wednesday, June 4, at the Dakota Event Center in Aberdeen
• Tuesday, June 17, at the Sioux Falls Convention Center

8 new troopers join South Dakota Highway Patrol

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Eight new troopers have joined the ranks of the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
• The recruits went through more than eight months of training to reach Friday's graduation ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda.
• The graduates completed basic law enforcement training followed by the South Dakota Highway Patrol Recruit Academy. The recruits were in field training from
