South Dakota Pump Prices Down Slightly

•  AAA South Dakota, April 8, 2014 - South Dakota's average price today for regular self-serve gasoline stands at $3.525, two cents above one month ago, but down slightly from last week. Fourteen states, including South Dakota, have a lower statewide gas price average today led by Montana at $3.29 per gallon. Two states have price averages above $4 today: California at $4.05 and Hawaii at $4.29, according to FuelGaugeReport.AAA.com.
•  Retail gasoline prices in 36 states have moved higher over the last week led by increases in the Southeast and Gulf Coast caused gas production issues. A number of Texas refineries have been offline, including Valero's refinery in Sunray, Alon's refinery in Big Springs and Phillips 66's refinery in Old Ocean. They're down as planned or unplanned maintenance is performed, fueled by the switchover to production of cleaner-burning summer gasoline blends.
• "Motorists nationwide have enjoyed lower year-over-year pump prices now for 81 consecutive days, but that could all change before the week is through," said Marilyn Buskohl, spokeswoman for AAA South Dakota. "Although today's average across the country is a fraction of a cent less than on this same date last year, that difference is the smallest since mid-January."
• Today's national average pump price is $3.586 per gallon, three cents higher than one week ago and a dime more than one month ago. On April 8 last year, prices had fallen for 34 of 40 days. Today, prices have increased for 54 of 60 days.
• According to AAA, peak pump prices are likely in sight but temporary spikes may still hit areas impacted by refinery issues, although problems nationwide have been minimal so far this spring.
• News that Libyan rebels have agreed to reopen two of four closed oil ports in that country added downward pressure to oil prices yesterday. Following an eight-month closure, the two ports will return a combined 180,000 barrels per day of crude oil to the global market. Despite this news, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil continues to hover near or above $100 per barrel. WTI settled at $100.44 per barrel, down 70 cents yesterday, $7 higher than the same date last year.
