SDSU to implement intensive ESL program

• MADISON, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota State University will be implementing an intensive English as a Second Language program that will prepare students to meet minimum requirements to be admitted to college.
• The school says the program will require students who speak a first language other than English to attend classes for 25 hours per week. The classes will focus on four language skills -- reading, writing, listening, and speaking -- as well as American culture.
• Students will be allowed to enter the program at three different levels based on their language skills.
• The school says students who successfully complete the program will be ready to meet language admission requirements to SDSU and other universities across the country.

Rapid City event to help SD parents track kids

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Rapid City is the next stop for an initiative in South Dakota to help parents if their children should ever go missing.
• The South Dakota Child Identification Program will collect information for packages with a child's identifiers at the Youth and Family Services Kids Fair this weekend. The packages may include a child's photos, dental impressions, fingerprints, a DNA cheek swab or video interview.
• That packet of information about each child will be given to his or her guardians to keep. There is no charge for the program. It is meant to aid law enforcement in recovering missing children.
• The event will be Friday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
