• The 236-acre addition to the park includes significant historical and cultural sites, as well as some of the last intact forestland in the region, featuring wildlife and plant life native to South Dakota. 
• The addition includes sites with great spiritual and ceremonial significance to Native Americans, such as the 78 known burial mounds of the Onoeta people, likely dating from between the years 1500-1700 A.D.  This site is one of the most important Native American cultural sites on the Great Plains, and is of great interest to archeologists as well.  Later, Native American tribes and French traders would establish a trading hub in the area.
