Memorabilia donated by Gertsen includes the plaque from the cornerstone of Aberdeen Athletic Field; game-worn uniforms from the Aberdeen Pheasants, St. Cloud Rox and Winnipeg Maroons; team autographed baseballs and game-used bats; and more than 560 autographs of major league players, coaches and umpires who at one time were associated with the Northern League.
• "The importance of this collection is incredible," said Dan Brosz, curator of collections at the Historical Society's museum.
• Some items already are on display in the museum. Items from the collection also will be featured prominently in an exhibit opening Oct. 24 in the Historical Society's museum tentatively called "Play Ball! The National Pastime in South Dakota." The exhibit will run through March 2016.

School of Mines, Ellsworth formalize partnership

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Ellsworth Air Force Base have formalized a partnership on projects including repairing and refurbishing B-1 bomber parts.
• Mines President Heather Wilson says technology developed at the school already has helped save the military half a million dollars and returned four bombers to service.
• Base officials say putting Mines research into use could lead to an additional $2.5 million in savings this year on the bombers.

SD governor approves texting while driving ban

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has signed a bill to ban texting while driving.
• He said in a statement that he hopes the new law will encourage South Dakotans to keep their eyes on the road and away from their phones.
• The law takes effect July 1. It makes texting while driving a secondary offence. People pulled over for other traffic infractions can be charged an additional $100 if they were also texting.
• The state Department of Public Safety will create an ad campaign to educate people about the new policy.
• Legislators who supported the measure said making texting while driving illegal will discourage and minimize it.
• The details of the measure provoked a lot of debate among lawmakers. It passed the House and Senate with wide margins of support.
