County open houses help SD reach state veterans

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Two counties are participating in a state effort this week to touch base with each one of the 75,000 South Dakota veterans.
• Operation Reaching All Veterans kicked off with a proclamation signed by Gov. Dennis Daugaard on the first day of the 2014 legislative session.
• The state Department of Veterans Affairs along with county and tribal veterans' services will host about 130 events. Staff will also reach out to veterans by phone to help set them up with federal, state and local services.
• Marshall County will host an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at Britton High School's auditorium. Moody County will do the same from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Fire Hall in Trent.

Arctic cold should be done but temps staying cool

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The region could still get a lot of snow and cold before winter is truly gone, but the real frigid weather should be behind.
• Warning coordination meteorologist Todd Heitkamp with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says arctic temps and below-zero wind chills are unlikely.
• But he says the outlook does call for below-normal temperatures and above normal precipitation.
• Heitkamp says a lot of people feel it's been a long winter. But he says that's likely because some daily high temperatures came in the middle of the night, instead of during the day. And the state didn't get many stretches of warmer weather during the typical January thaw.
• Heitkamp says this winter actually won't go down as one of the worst on record.

Rapid City opens 3 yard waste disposal sites

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Rapid City officials are opening three drop off sites across the city for yard waste.
• The disposal sites will open Tuesday in West Boulevard North, Fitzgerald Stadium and the landfill's new 24-hour drop off facility.
• The new 24-hour drop off facility is located at the front of the Rapid City landfill on South 79. The site is lighted and has security cameras.
• Curbside yard waste pickup is also scheduled to resume on Tuesday. Officials
