Western SD city to host free tire disposal program

• RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- A western South Dakota city will be hosting a free tire disposal program for residential customers of the local landfill.
• Rapid City officials say there is no limit to the number of tires that customers of the Rapid City Landfill can dispose of during the event, but they say customers are expected to help in the unloading and proper placement of the tires at the landfill.
• City officials say no commercial tire businesses are eligible to participate in the program that will take place on April 4 and 5. They say large tractor tires will not be accepted.

Deadline nearing to apply for property tax relief

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The deadline for elderly and disabled South Dakotas to apply for property tax relief is nearing.
• The state's Department of Revenue is reminding homeowners that they have until April 1 to submit an application.
• Under a state program, a homeowner's property assessment can be prevented from increasing for tax purposes. Therefore, if the actual value of the home increases, the homeowner would still pay property taxes on the former value.
• Individuals must meet a number of requirements to participate in the assessment freeze program. The requirements include being at least 65 years old or disabled as defined by the Social Security Act and having an income of less than $26,570 for a single-member household.
• Applications can be found on the department's website. They must be submitted to the county treasurer.

Hunters allowed to take snow geese this spring

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conservation order is allowing hunters to shoot snow geese this spring.
