Today in Weather History

1987: Strong winds and heavy snow produced blizzard conditions across South Dakota March 23rd through the 25th. Snow amounts ranged from 6 to 19 inches. Snow totals included 19" at Winner (in Tripp County), 15" at Murdo (in Jones County), and 12" at Woonsocket (in Sanborn County) and Platte (in Charles Mix County). The wind piled the snow into drifts up to 10 feet deep. The heavy, wet snow broke power lines in several counties in the south central and east central parts of the state knocking out power for up to a few days.

1899: A whopping 141 inches of snow fell on Ruby, CO between the 23rd and 30th to establish the state record for greatest snowfall from a single storm at the time.

1913: An F4 tornado hit Omaha, NE at 5:45 pm killing a total of 101 and injuring 350 people. The tornado killed 7 people at Ralston, and then hit Omaha, killing another 94. The same day another F4 tornado made a path through Indiana including Terre Haute. This tornado killed 21.

2007: In what was arguably New Mexico's worst tornado on record, an F2 killed two and injured 33 as it moved through Clovis. Over $16 million damage was done.
