Today in Weather History

1968: During a severe weather event, hail up to 1.75 inches in diameter fell 2 miles south of Brookings. In addition, hail 1.00 inch in diameter fell 3 miles northeast of Sioux Falls.

1948: One of Illinois' deadliest tornadoes affected areas in and north of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The tornado traveled from Alton to Bunker Hill, killing 33 people and injuring 449. Half of Fosterburg and 80% of Bunker Hill were damaged or destroyed. The twister occurred at 6:30 in the morning.

1986: The 153-mph wind gust that was recorded in Scotland's Cairngorm Mountains is the highest ever recorded in the United Kingdom.

2003: A two-day snowstorm dumped seven feet of snow on parts of Colorado and Wyoming. The heavy snow ripped the cloth roof at Denver International Airport. Meanwhile, small tornadoes were reported in Tennessee and Alabama.
