St. Thomas More wins in rout at state A

• SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) -- Alexys Swedlund scored 20 points as St. Thomas More rolled to a 61-16 win over Garretson Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota Class A basketball tournament.
• Swedlund made eight of 14 shots from the field for the top-seeded Cavaliers (21-1), who are was the 2012 state champions. St. Thomas More raced out to a 26-4 lead after one quarter.
• The Cavalier shot 44 percent from the field and dominated in bench scoring (14-4), Points in the paint (14-2) and points off turnovers (29-7).
• Cavaliers' Moira Duffy added 14 points.
• Brianna Mudder and Haley Edmundson led Garretson (11-12) with four points each. The Blue Dragon had lost 11 of 12 games to end the regular season, but earned its second state tournament berth, and first in Class A.

Sully Buttes rolls over Gayville-Volin

• HURON, S.D. (AP) -- Karlea Stahl had 16 points and six rebounds as Sully Buttes rolled over Gayville-Volin 65-31 Thursday at the South Dakota Class B girls basketball tournament.
• Stahl was 5-for-9 from the field for the Chargers (22-1), who are making their 10th state tourney appearance.
• Sully Buttes shot 46 percent from the field while holding Gayville-Volin to just 19 percent. The Raiders made just six of 33 shots from the field, including two of 10 3-pointers.
• Remi Wientjes added 15 points and Chloe Lamb 13 for the Chargers.
• Genny Clark was the only player from Gayville-Volin (15-8) to reach double figures with 12 points.
• The Raiders are appearing in their first state tournament.

SF Washington wins at state AA

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- Sioux Falls Washington shook off a one-point third quarter and beat Harrisburg 50-35 Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota Class AA girls basketball tournament.
• The Warriors (21-2) were cruising along with a 31-21 lead at half. It helped that Harrisburg (15-9) scored just five points in the third.
