SD Legislature OKs $1.95 million to fight beetles

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Senate has agreed to authorize $1.95 million to suppress pine beetle infestation.
• Senators voted 30-4 in support of the measure that the state House previously approved.
• The bill will go next to Gov. Dennis Daugaard. If approved, the funding will be immediately available for use by state agencies.
• The original draft came from the governor and called for $350,000 to address the problem in the Black Hills of western South Dakota. It was adjusted to include more funds to address the infestation across the state.
• One opponent objects to the expanded scope of the bill. Supporters say it's important to keep pressure on the beetles.
• A recent survey shows the 18-year battle to eradicate the mountain pine beetle from the Black Hills is slowing the pest's progress.

USD launches search for head men's hoops coach

• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- The University of South Dakota has launched a national search for a new head men's basketball coach.
• The school is not retaining Joey James, who held the position on an interim basis this past season. He took over for Dave Boots, who retired last September after 25 years. Boots was the winningest coach in program history.
• James played for the Coyotes from 1997-99 and spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach before assuming the interim head coach job. School officials said at the time that a national search for a full-time successor would begin after the season.
• USD lost to Denver in the Summit League Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday, and finished the season 12-18.
