• Murray State's board of regents voted unanimously Wednesday to hire Robert Davies as the university's president. Davies interviewed with university officials and campus groups this week.
• Murray State said Davies' contract hasn't been finalized but is expected to officially begin July 14.
• Tim Miller has been interim president since mid-2013 following the departure of Randy Dunn.
• James Smith, president of Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., was the other finalist.
• Davies has been president at Eastern Oregon since 2009. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Nevada at Reno, an MBA from the University of Oregon and a doctorate in higher education administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

SD Senate passes bill with funds for 4 projects

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Senate has approved a bill to fund four projects around the state with $2.46 million.
• Because it requires state funding, the bill needed support from two thirds of the chamber, which it barely received. Senators voted 24-9 in support of the measure.
• The bill has passed the House and will move next to Gov. Dennis Daugaard.
• It provides $1 million for the Lewis and Clark Rural Water System. It also funds a shale research facility, airport improvements and the Readiness and Environmental Protection and Integration buffer program at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
• Opponents of the measure worry it's unconstitutional to put so many different projects in a single bill. Supporters say the projects are important and the generic title of the bill encompasses the projects covered.

SD Senate OKs bill to open high school group

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The group that governs South Dakota high school sports and other activities will likely have to follow the state's open government policies.
• With a 34-1 vote, senators granted final legislative approval to the measure. It already passed the House and the Senate once before.
• Gov. Dennis Daugaard will review the bill next.
• It would require that the South Dakota High School Activities Association open
