SD Senate OKs new licenses for home brew helpers

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Senate has unanimously approved a bill to license businesses that help home brewers make and bottle malt beverages and wine.
• It has already passed the House and goes next to Gov. Dennis Daugaard for final review.
• The bill would require a $250 license for businesses that provide equipment and expertise to home brewers.
• The bill's sponsor says two such businesses exist in the state. He says this bill allows the state to address the issue before the industry expands.
• It prohibits the beverages from being consumed at the business site.
• Existing law states that home brewers can produce up to 200 gallons for personal use a year and they cannot sell it.

Woman sentenced for stealing from tribal police

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- An Eagle Butte woman has been sentenced for stealing from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Police Department when she worked there.
• Forty-one-year-old Kristi Lawrence was given three months in federal custody and six months of home confinement, to be followed by three years of supervised release. She also must pay nearly $88,000 in restitution.
• U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says Lawrence manipulated timesheets over a two-year period starting October 2012 to obtain unauthorized overtime pay. She pleaded guilty last December to a charge of theft from an Indian tribal organization.

South Dakota lawmakers optimistic on spending

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Expressing optimism that South Dakota's construction and agricultural industries will prosper in the next year, the Legislature's budget-writing committee decided Tuesday that the state will have more money to spend than economists had predicted.
