$5.2 million to go to Lewis and Clark water system

• WASHINGTON (AP) -- A water system designed to bring high-quality, purified water to rural parts of three states will get an additional $5.2 million in federal funding.
• South Dakota Rep. Kristi Noem announced Tuesday that the Lewis and Clark Regional Water System would get additional money from the Bureau of Reclamation.
• U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson says this project will contribute to the economic development and quality of life of many residents in the state.
• Lewis and Clark executive director Troy Larson says the project still needs millions more in federal funds, but the additional money will allow about 5 more miles of pipeline to be built.
• The Lewis and Clark Regional Water system is designed to improve the water supply to rural parts of South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.


SD man gets 9 years in prison in fatal crash

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- A southeast South Dakota man accused of fatally injuring a motorcyclist while speeding and texting has been sentenced to nine years in prison.
• Twenty-two-year-old Brent O'Neal was sentenced Tuesday in Sioux Falls. He pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in December.
• O'Neal was arrested in July 2012 after causing a five-vehicle chain-reaction crash that killed 33-year-old motorcyclist Philip Sorensen.
• O'Neal revealed in a jailhouse conversation with a visitor after his arrest that he was texting and driving that night while trying to make plans for his 21st birthday. He tried to have the statements tossed out of court but a judge denied the motion.
• The judge in Minnehaha County sentenced O'Neal to 20 years in prison, but suspended 11.
• O'Neal offered his "deepest apologies" to Sorensen's family during the hearing.


Bill to stabilize SD bank tax headed to governor

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Gov. Dennis Daugaard's plan to stabilize the state bank tax has won final approval from the South Dakota Legislature.
• The Senate voted 34-1 to pass the measure, which has already been approved
