The measure would allow people who are involuntarily committed as mentally ill and deemed a threat to others to be added to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Licensed firearms dealers conduct a check through that system to determine whether a customer is eligible to buy a gun.

Students present research at state Capitol

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Thirteen undergraduate students from South Dakota colleges and universities will bring their research work to the state Capitol on Thursday and presenting their projects to residents and state lawmakers.
• The 2014 Student Research Poster Session runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the rotunda.
• Board of Regents executive director Jack Warner says the purpose is to allow state policymakers to meet these beneficiaries of their research investments. Students get to learn more about how public policy decisions impact higher education.
