Silver Skates Annual Meeting is Today

The Carnival of Silver Skates annual meeting will be Sunday, March 2nd at 7 PM at the ice skating warming house in Groton. Parents of all skaters are encouraged to attend. An election of officers for the 2015 Carnival will be held. The Carnival of Silver Skates Executive Board includes: co-chairs, secretary, treasurer, costume chair, music/rink/instruction chair, communications coordinator and building committee chair. We need your input and help if the Carnival is to continue. Contact Janae Hughes (605-397-3010) with any questions. Please plan to attend the meeting and get involved this year.

DI Dessert Theater is Today

Groton's Destination Imagination will be hosting a Dessert Theater today (Sunday) starting at 2 p.m. at the Elementary Gym. This is a chance for the groups to put on their performances in front of a crowd before the regional competition March 8 at the Johnson Fine Arts Center on the campus of Northern State University.

Hawkins places second at state

Kelby Hawkins placed second at the state wrestling tournament as he was decisioned by Alex Caba, Bon Homme/Scotland, 4-1, in the championship match. Earlier on Saturday, he had pinned Jacob Fitzgerald of Garretson, 3:08, in the championship semifinals.

Election slated for Groton, no school board election

• An election will be held in Groton for mayor and for councilmen in two of the three wards.
• In Ward 1, David Blackmun, Jr., turned in his petition. Clare Brotherton is the incumbent and did not take out a petition.
• In Ward 2, David McGannon and Ron Belden will be running for the two-year term. McGannon is the appointed incumbent, who replaced Hanlon on the council after Hanlon was appointed mayor.
• In Ward 3, Gary Heitmann and Burt Glover will be running for the two-year term. Heitmann is the incumbent.
• And for mayor, Scott Hanlon and Eddy Nehls will be running for a two-year term. Hanlon is the appointed mayor after the death of Mayor Roy Olson, who was serving a three-year term. There are two years left in that term.
• There is no school board election this year. Steve Smith and Grant Rix have submitted the only two petitions. Joy Voss had decided not to seek re-election to the board.
