• I want to thank you for writing to me on the issue of the Common Core curriculum. In case you have not studied this issue, I'm sure you have followed it in the news and know that it has been a prominent discussion at this legislative session. We've had standardized tests for many years. Right now, only math and reading are tested on the state-wide test given each spring to 3-8 grade students and again in 11^th grade of high school. The Common Core State Standards will continue to guide educational standards in English language arts and mathematics for grades K-12 and be incorporated in the tests next spring.
•  Students will take what's called a "field test" of the new assessment in spring 2014, with full implementation of the new test in 2014-15. The tests will only be for math and language arts. One bill which I supported   required a waiting period before we adopt any new standards for any other subject areas.  The state Department of Education was also in favor of this legislation and spoke as a proponent during the committee process.  Now is a good time to wait and see and to be cautious that this is the right thing for SD before we move forward.
