SD launches website on sand and gravel mining

• PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Environment has launched a website that provides information on mine sites for sand, gravel and aggregate materials used in construction.
• The site features an interactive map showing information for about 519 construction aggregate licenses the department has issued to mine nearly 21,000 acres at 1,638 pits.
• The website also has information on nearly 4,600 active and inactive sites that have been licensed since 1983.
• The interactive map covers sand and gravel mine sites. It also includes mine sites for rock to be crushed and used in construction, pegmatite minerals, limestone, iron ore, gypsum, shale, pozzolan and other materials used to make cement or lime.

Syrup workshops planned for 3 SD cities

• BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota State University's College of Agricultural and Biological Sciences is putting on three maple syrup processing workshops around the state.
• The workshops are for people with a few sugar, silver maple or boxelder trees who are interested in hobby maple syrup production or are considering commercial production.
• The first is scheduled for Feb. 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the SDSU Extension Regional Center in Aberdeen.
• The other sessions are March 3 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center in Brookings and March 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the SDSU Extension Regional Center in Sioux Falls. McCrory Gardens taps into 25 maples in early March.
