South Dakota cattle on feed up 7 percent from 2013

• SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota feedlots with capacities of 1,000 or more animals had 240,000 cattle on feed on Feb. 1, up 7 percent from last year.
• The Agriculture Department says in its latest report that placements in feedlots during January totaled 54,000 head, up 50 percent from 2013.
• Marketings of fed cattle during January totaled 41,000 head, up 3 percent from last year.

S Dakota snaps string, beats W Illinois, 64-54

• VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) -- South Dakota used a deft touch from the free throw line and from beyond the arc to snap a six-game losing streak to Western Illinois and even its Summit League record with a 64-54 win Saturday.
• Karim Rowson and Tyler Larson scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, to lead South Dakota (12-15, 6-6 Summit). The Coyotes were 17 of 18 from the free throw line, hitting their final six in a row to close out the Leathernecks. South Dakota connected on 7 of 18 shots from long range and were 20 of 45 from the field (44.4 percent).
• Western Illinois (9-18, 3-9) was 22 of 48 from the field (45.8 percent), but connected on just 3 of 17 3-point attempts and was 7 of 15 from the line.
• Garrett Covington scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Leathernecks, with Jabari Sandifer adding another 12 points.

North Dakota State beats South Dakota State 74-59

• FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- TrayVonn Wright scored 20 points with seven rebounds as North Dakota State won its fifth straight to lead the Summit League by defeating South Dakota State 74-59 on Saturday.
• Marshall Bjorklund had 18 points for the Bison (21-6, 10-2 Summit), Lawrence Alexander added 12 and Kory Brown 10.
• North Dakota State jumped to a 16-6 lead to start the first period and led 33-18 at halftime.
• An Alexander layup at 14:10 in the second half gave the Bison their biggest lead of the game, 46-26. South Dakota State came within 10 on a Marcus Heemstra 3-pointer with 3:28 left to play before the Bison went 11-6 to finish with Alexander,
